Inspired by the abandoned ruins in Taiwanese nature, this project explores the inevitable disappearance of our existence and the correspondence between earth and body. Unlike nature and its infinite cycles, we as humans are such a fleeting existence.
Time marches forward despite our best efforts to suspend it in place,
and what remains are just fragments of our passing. Through reinterpreting the juxtaposition of natural abundance and fragility of the man-made, I wish to offer consolation for the ephemerality of our time and rebuild a relationship with nature that is harmonious and reciprocal.
This collection has been crafted with natural fabrics, yarns, thread, and clay accessories that are all biodegradable. With immense care and concentration on craftsmanship, the pieces were designed and made to last, while to be remained as part of the natural cycle.
Responding to the concept of the ‘remains’ and the simplicity of indigenous dressing, subtraction and zero-waste cutting techniques were used in crafting this collection. This resulted in timeless and organic silhouettes that minimised waste. The knitwear element of the collection was inspired by the Atayal people who once lived upon the lands of ruins, their relationships with nature and heritage textiles. Through Stoll programming, I produced fully fashioned knitted pieces that are completely zero-waste.
“Of earth they were made, and into earth they return.”
